Finishing 2025 Strong: December Classroom Management Tips
December is one of the trickiest months for new teachers (all teachers)! Students are excited, routines slip, and everyone is counting down to break. But this month can also provide an opportunity to set the tone for January.
Here are five, low-lift strategies to help you finish the year strong and return after break with momentum.
1. Re-teach Key Routines
Don’t just remind students of expectations, re-teach them. Model the routine, have students practice, and celebrate when it goes well. A few minutes of practice now prevents frustration later.
2. Connect Behavior to Purpose
Instead of just focusing on rules, help students understand why expectations matter. For example:
“When we keep transitions quick, we get more time for our projects.”
Purpose builds buy-in.
3. Stay Consistent and Follow Through
December exposes inconsistency. Choose 2–3 non-negotiables and reinforce them daily. For instance, voice levels, phones, or following directions the first time. Stable expectations build trust and calm. If you set the expectation, follow through with the reward or consequence.
4. Lean on Predictable Structures
Keep lessons simple and consistent and integrate unique lessons into existing structures. Use formats that support focus, like:
- Mini-lesson — practice — exit ticket
- I do—we do— you do
- Stations with timers
- Think-pair-share
Predictability keeps students grounded during high-energy weeks.
5. Prep Now for January
Before break, set up for your return! Organize materials, prep for the day you return, and note which routines you want to modify or tighten in January. A smooth return starts with December planning and allows you to really relax over the break, knowing that your first day back is planned for.
December isn’t just about making it to break, it’s about setting up a strong, calm, and focused start to the new year. With clarity, consistency, and a bit of proactive planning, you can turn a chaotic month into a powerful reset!
